Online Class:
How to Get Freelance Work
with Eric
Butterman
February 16-March 16
With five weekly chats
7-8 p.m. CST on Tuesdays, February 16, February 23,
March 2, March, 9, & March 16
With publishing companies laying off workers, freelance
writers offer them a cheaper alternative -- yep, you might
actually make more money. The sad truth is the success of
a freelance writer isn't usually just based on quality of
work or marketing. It's often about who's the most
organized, has a clear plan for future goals, and
understands how to best execute it.
In this course, you'll learn pitching from actual pitches
that sold for $1,000 or more, and we'll write pitches
together and analyze them for a better chance at landing
assignments.
Each Monday a lecture will be e-mailed out, followed by
everyone meeting in a chat room every Tuesday night.
Eric Butterman is a
freelance writer and teacher who's written for more than
fifty publications, including
Glamour and
ESPN.com.

The Practice of
Reading and Writing Together
with Saundra Goldman
Five sessions on Sundays
3-6 p.m. January 10,
February 14, March 14, April 11, & May 16
This class combines writing practice with the practice
of close and careful reading for craft. Each month we
will cover a different book, selected for its example
of structure, scene, setting, etc. Then, we'll try
those techniques in class using the structure of
writing practice. In between meetings, students will
write in small groups.
This class requires a commitment to regular writing
practice, reading the assigned material at least once,
and reading/listening to each others work without
judgment or comment. While we will not be working on
specific projects, students can use the class to
strengthen work in progress or begin new work.
Students have the opportunity to turn in one piece of
writing to the instructor, between 10 and 15 pages,
for feedback.

Reminder:
There will be no third Thursday
Happy Hour or Monthly Program in December! They'll
resume on January 21.
